Preparing the Dinner

Our goal is to provide a home-cooked meal each week to 150 of our homeless neighbors.

This requires many individuals working together, but separately, to cook a portion of the meal.

It is not a requirement to cook something in order to serve . . . you can do one or the other . . . or both.

If you’d prefer not to physically serve, but you still want to be involved, you can cook at home and drop it off with minimal contact.

Most of the supplies to make the meal are donated to We See You and we need people who are willing to cook & prepare the food.

If you'd like to help by cooking part of the meal, we ask that you cook it on Tuesday and deliver it by 4:30pm so it can be served hot.

To view the weekly menu & to sign up, find the appropriate date on the website

@ weseeyousandiego.com -> monthly menus -> date -> follow the link to the spreadsheet & add your name to the right of the item you'd like to bring or cook.

Serving at the Dinner

Volunteers begin to arrive around 3:30pm to set up. (Set up tables, chairs, the coffee station, roll up cutlery, organize donations (clothes/hygiene supplies) etc.

A white-board with lanyards highlights different volunteer jobs. All servers wear lanyards so that we know & our guests know, who is volunteering that evening.

The gate opens at 5pm to guests, who are quickly greeted with cold water, appetizers, & our self-serve coffee bar.

At 5:15pm the director says a prayer for the meal & servers bring dinner to guests restaurant style.

Volunteer-wise, 10-12 people prepare plates, while other volunteers grab them, and bring them out.

A clothing team also visits tables 'taking orders' if guests are in need of clothing. If we have the item, we bring it to them. It’s kind of like being a personal shopper!

After the meal, a cart full of desserts is pushed around so guests are able to select a plate full of sweet treats.

Breakdown & cleanup start around 6:45pm.

Things to Note

Volunteers are invited to take a plate to eat. Many of our guests love when the servers pull up a chair & start conversation.

Kids are welcome! They are invited to serve alongside you or spend time having fun with our amazing Childcare Team. Childcare is available at no cost, we just ask that you RSVP so we know how many children to expect, thus how many caregivers we need.

You are free to come and go as your schedule permits. Come anytime 3-7pm. There is always a job to do.

We ask you to wear a mask and gloves (when you're handling food) which are both provided.
